In Marrakech you have many holiday accomodations at your disposal. You can choose between a riad, a holiday apartment or a house or villa on the outskirts of Marrakech. The holiday apartments are in the new sector called Gueliz, close to downtown Marrakech. You can choose a riad which is a typical Moroccan hotel tastefully decorated in Arabian style. The vast majority of the riads are in the medina of Marrakech. The medina is the old sector beside the Djema El Fnaa square and the Koutoubia within the ancient walls of Marrakech. The streets are narrow and you can walk to the plaza and the Souk, where you can let yourself be impressed with their multiple colors and smells and observe the day to day in Marrakech with the crowd of people and endless activities. Later we will explain the advantages and disadvantages of each holiday accommodation.

Transport from Menara Marrakech airport
Once you have arrived at Marrakech airport, you can take a bus from just in front of the departures building of the airport. The ticket costs about 30 dirhams and leaves approximately every 30 minutes. It can take you to all the important points of the city, such as up to the medina of Marrakech, Djemaa El Fna Square, Koutoubia, bus station and the new part of the city of Marrakech called Gueliz. If you wish to go to The Palmerie, which is located in the outskirts of Marrakesh, you have to take a taxi.

There are plenty of taxis in front of the departures exit of the building. The price is not usually fixed, although lately they have put a sign with official prices of 100 dirhams. But it can happen that at arriving at the destination, the taxi driver asks you for much more. We advise you to always ask for a transfer which usually costs about 15 Euros. This way you can avoid lots of unpleasant surprises and moments after a long journey. All hotels, riads and almost all the apartments often offer this service, and the drivers know the way and leave you directly at the gateway without unpleasant surprises. If you've booked a hotel in the Medina, it is not always so easy to get to the front door. For this check the section called "Holiday accommodation in Marrakech".

Transport in Marrakech
Transport in Marrakech is inexpensive, easy and secure. The inhabitants of Marrakech are very accustomed to tourism, and without any problem, you can take public transportation as a tourist. It is a safe city, and there is no reason to fear for your safety. Above all Marrakesh is not too big a city and you can go to many places on foot. To move from your hotel, Hotel or apartment you can choose between the bus, the petit taxi or large taxi. The prices that you are given below are of course approximate and only valid for the Centre of Marrakech, for example from Gueliz to Jemaa El Fna square. If you go to the Palmerie that is located in the outskirts, Petit taxi and bus price is higher of course. Here you will learn everything you need to know on these means of transport:

Bus
The Bus is good choice to travel for 1 or 2 people, since it is very economical and at times when there are many people waiting for a taxi is preferable to catch the bus, if you find a stop nearby. Marrakech buses are usually second hand old buses purchased from Spain and you should know that neither buses nor taxis usually have air conditioning. There are many buses going from or to the Djama El Fna Square and from or to the Koutoubia. The bus ticket is very cheap. It costs about 4 dirhams per person. So be prepared to have some change.

"Petit Taxi"
For two or three people the price is usually the same as the bus fare or even a little cheaper if you take a petit taxi. As it is also economical, you must also have sufficient change. The price of a petit taxi for short distances can cost you about 15 dirhams. The petit taxis in Marrakech is usually beige or white colour and can take up to a maximum of 3 people and are only for travelling short distances. They reach the Palmerie of Marrakech. How does it work? The petit taxi operates as a bus. It is not often empty when you take it. You must stand in the street facing the right direction, where you want to go in Marrakech. Indicate with your hand/ finger, if you're going straight or if you wish to turn to the right or the left. Don't worry, if a taxi stops but doesn’t take you. This happens very often. It’s just that it’s taking a different route than yours. Keep trying and surely one will stop and take you. All petit taxis use the taxi-meter and totally independent, if there is already an occupant in the vehicle. If there is a person in the cab, you are number 2 on the taxi-meter. In the case that there are two people in the vehicle, you're number 3 on the taxi-meter. Everything is very organized. Insist on the driver that he puts the meter on to avoid that they make you pay for the other occupants.

"Gran Taxi"
Large Taxis are old taxis from Germany and all are white or beige Mercedes. You can easily distinguish the petit taxi from the large one, since all taxis that are not a Mercedes are petit taxis. Large cabs tend to be rather more expensive and travel long distances as well as short ones. They can carry up to a maximum of 6 people or more, and if you make a trip to the outskirts of Marrakech, you'll encounter many times with 2 people in the front seat. This is completely normal in Marrakech. We advise you to take the great taxi only for long distances or in the case that you are many people. In this case it is convenient to negotiate the price. If you are 3 or more, you can also take two petit taxis.
